What Is Byetta?

In 2005, Byetta was introduced to the U.S. market. Generically known as exenatide, it is manufactured and distributed by Eli Lilly and Amylin Pharmaceuticals as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes. Hundreds of thousands of people worldwide use Byetta, but in some cases, it has been linked to life-threatening side effects. These effects can include acute hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis.

Health Care Alerts From the FDA

In October 2007 and again in August 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued health care alerts that linked close to 30 instances of acute pancreatitis to the use of Byetta. The FDA requested that Amylin Pharmaceuticals change the product label to reflect stronger, bolder warnings about the risks of acute pancreatitis.

Although pancreatitis can develop and then subside again, such inflammation can cause long-term damage to the pancreas if left untreated.

Side Effects of Byetta and Symptoms of Acute Pancreatitis

Some of the most common side effects reported with the use of Byetta include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Upper abdominal discomfort
  • Indigestion

However, the FDA advises all patients taking Byetta to seek medical attention immediately if they begin to experience persistent, severe pain in the abdominal region. Such intense and unexplained pain, occasionally accompanied by nausea and vomiting, can be a sign of acute hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis.
